The Morning After Girls @ Henry Fonda Theatre
The most glaring thing you will notice about this Aussie group is, that for the most part at least, they are actually Morning After Dudes. The second thing you'll notice is their rich, deep encompassing sound. It's a strictly 90's mash up of My Bloody Valentine heads down strumming, the slow burn sleaze of Dandy Warhols, and the fluid dance beats of Madchester's own Happy Mondays. It's not really about songs when you hear this band. It's more a case of going for the whole ride. The sound feels like something you can drown in. A noise like this could easily disintegrate into a muddy mess, but good sound tonight ensures that each guitar rings out distinctively. Tonight they play before Elefant who in turn are opening for BRMC, so it makes for a nice team of retro sounding rock and an audience that are at least inquisitive. Even during this brief twenty or so minutes the band has the ability to mesmerize you by throwing out grungy psychedelic shapes to darkest corners of the room. I look forward to seeing them late night in a small club setting as I feel sure that they would soar. That is not to say they didn’t master the big stage because they did. Skinny guys with expansive grooves that seemed to flow effortlessly accentuated by their cool as fuck swagger. Yep, I have to say I enjoyed these guys. Sure it is new shoegaze at its core and strictly speaking it's hardly innovative, but with bands such as Autolux and Giant Drag currently coming up I think the time is ripe for the Girls. –Glenurse
