Editors @ Spaceland
Jan 16th 2006
In my three years of living in
L.A. I’ve never seen a
longer line for Spaceland - not ever. The club was already packed inside and
there were another 500 people in line around the block. This is as insane as it
gets. Granted it is a free show on MLK night, and everyone is shocked at just
how many people have turned up. I feel sorry for the enormo line as I enter,
but I also remember that I’ve been bugging everyone in L.A. about these guys for
a whole year. So, does my entry feel justified? Fuck yeah! After selling out
a full UK tour and landing their debut album in the top 10 the band have quietly
arrived for a couple of intimate gigs before, no doubt, returning to play the
bigger rooms. Spaceland is rammed inside and pretty soon the boys from Brum hit
the stage. Straight away I'm excited to hear the songs I have been playing to
death for months now. The sound is crystal clear and this Gang of Four looks a
little nervous early on, but even that plays to their favor as it enhances the
tight edges of "Lights" and "Blood". In skinny as a rake singer Tom Smith (how
very English!) the band have a frontman as energetic as a ball of Chris
Martins. He is constantly throwing himself and his guitar around, all the while
delivering powerful vocals. Looking like a thug, the bassist rarely breaks a
sweat or even smiles, but his eyes burn with passion and he knows these rhythms
are made to dance to. By the time they kick into the gorgeous "Camera" they are
on fire. The song cannot and will not be contained by this tiny club. It’s
here that you catch glimpses of their future - - bigger stages, bigger crowds,
big ass light show…. Hearing "Sparks" tonight I seriously have no doubt in this
band’s potential - none what-so-ever. It’s too early in the game for me to say
I told you so, but give it a year or more and I definitely will. You often read
and hear the eternal phrase "next big thing," well go see Editors and for once
you'll actually believe it. I for one am starting my campaign now: Editors for
Coachella! -Glenurse
