Reverend Horton Heat
At House of Blues, West Hollywood
April 25, 2002
Missing the opening act (Nashville Pussy), the Bite Me! Squad walked in on the first song in the Reverend Horton Heat’s set. Knowing what to expect, I was nonetheless surprised at the mass of hot, sweaty humanity that teemed before us. In Los Angeles, it is almost an impossibility to put together a mosh pit at a rockabilly show (only the good Rev and the Supersuckers come to mind). The floor at House of Blues was one big, enthusiastically happy pit!
Touring behind what is Reverend Horton Heat’s best CD in years (Lucky 7), the Rev (guitar/vox), Jimbo (bass), and Scott Churilla (drums) were in fine form on this Thursday night. (Note to self, where does the Rev shop? His blazer was kickin’!) Churning furiously through crowd favorites “Psychobilly Freakout”, “Jimbo Song” and “Spend a Night in the Box”, the party was cranking to 11. New songs like “Loco Gringos Like a Party” were received by the crowd like people trekking through the desert who find water.
Like a fine whisky, Reverend Horton Heat only gets better with aging. See them any chance you get. -J
