Preaching to the Perverted:

The 10th Anniversary Tour

Pigface, Gravity Kills, Godhead

The Keyclub, Hollywood

December 5th

Preaching to the Perverted – what an appropriate title for a show that involves the likes of Pigface, Gravity Kills, and Godhead. After all, industrial music and perverseness seem to go hand in hand.

Martin Atkins, the mastermind behind the whole event, started the night off with a lovely little poem about Fuck.  “Fuck (insert anything here),” such as “Fuck $4 beers. Fuck 80’s comeback bands. Fuck Pigface.” And, if you’re a diehard Pigface fan you get the inside joke. Martin’s rant was followed by a one-song performance from Invisible recording artist Meg Lee Chin. The audience cheered as the pint-sized princess laid out her signature rhymes over dancey industrial beats.

Thanks to Meg Lee the crowd was officially in the mood to groove and Godhead, sporting new drummer Tom Z (formerly of Bile), kept the party rolling. Months and months of touring have turned the Washington D.C. industrialites into a well-oiled machine and, as a result, tonight’s performance was incredibly polished and visually stimulating. Vocalist Jason Miller infused each song with a productive energy and charm that added a theatrical element to the set, while bandmates Mike Miller (guitars), The Method (bass), and Tom infused each tune with a passion that was contagious.

Unlike Godhead, Gravity Kills has been missing from the touring circuit for quite some time. (Rumor has it that they’ve recently signed with Sanctuary Records and will have a new album out soon.) Apparently, the time away from the road has done the techno-grunge quartet some good because the enthusiastic unit attacked their set with an energy that got the crowd moving right from start and kept the excitement flowing all the way to the indomitable closer “Enough.”

Godhead and Gravity Kills both earned “A’s” for the evening but Pigface stole the night. The post-punk industrial unit features an all-star line-up that changes with every album and every tour. Currently, the mega-group consists of Charles Levi (Thrill Kill Kult), Seibold (Hate Dept.) Chris Haskett (Rollins’ Band), Jared Louche (Chemlab), Curse Mackey (Grim Faeries, Evil Mothers) and Chris Connelly (Damage Manual). The show began with an acoustic piece led by Connelly, which was followed by a number of gems compiled from the band’s illustrious career.

One never knows what to expect from Pigface – anything goes on stage. Throughout the show the members traded instruments and vocal duties, with the exception of Atkins, whose skilled and powerful drumming was complemented by a female counterpart simply known as Dickless. Meg Lee even jumped in and treated fans to a fantastic rendition of  “Nutopia”. These super tight and talented musicians performed with impressive group chemistry.  Anyone who has seen Pigface before will attest that their live show is spectacular and tonight’s extravaganza was, without a doubt, a mind-blowing experience.   -NIN
