An E-Interview with RPM -by J

She knows piano - incredibly well. She knows songwriting, ideas - and a handful of strategically placed bad words. She knows rock, and she knows pop. And she isn't afraid to use any of it. RPM is not just her moniker, it is her life. On her self-released debut CD Irrational Anthem, she showcases all of it.
Irrational Anthem is your first CD. Describe your decision to release it independently on your own 7940 Records label?
Basically, I was sick of jumping through hoops and showcasing and
meeting with, and just basically dealing with, the bullshit at major labels. I
got to the point where I just looked at Frank (my producer) and we knew it was
time to let people hear this music…on my terms. I won’t water down my lyrics. I
won’t edit myself. I won’t play guitar in a skirt. Those were all stumbling
blocks for people in signing me…so fuck them.
Would you recommend releasing independently for other artists that are in
your position?
It depends. Are they willing to put in 14 hour days then go play
a show? Work as hard as if they were a stockbroker and then go write a song?
It’s business. It’s hard work. It’s studying and learning how to do things you
never thought a musician would have to do. And it’s pouring 100% into the
business, and then 100% into your art. I never sleep. But I’ve never been more
content. If they can hack it….sure. It’s an empowering and fulfilling path. But
if they are just going to put it on cdbaby and see what happens? Why bother.
Your lyrics are so blunt - where do you come up with inspiration?
Life. Reality.
You seem to enjoy controversy - what do you suppose drives you?
I do enjoy it…because I enjoy thought. Discussion. Anything but
apathy. Controversy is defined as a prolonged argument…a dispute. That kind of
interaction breeds new ideas. Breaks down the status quo. And that is a good
thing…especially the way the world, specifically America, is right now.
What would be the top 3 things you would recommend an artist starting out
do?
Get really good at their instrument…know at least one …exceptionally well. Work on their writing like a novelist works on his first draft. And have no fear.
What was your most embarrassing moment on stage?
I don’t really get embarrassed.
Where are some of your favorite places to play live?
The Whisky in LA…Arlenes Grocery in New York.
What is the best advice you ever received?
All the advice I have ever received has fucking sucked.
What is your music industry dream - for you or for others?
That substance starts to enter into mainstream music.
And, as always, is there anything you'd like to add?
